Renowned cancer specialist Dr Nori Dattatreyudu of Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medical Centre, New York will be awarded the Dr Y.Nayudamma Memorial Award 2006.
Dr Nayudamma Memorial Trust Managing Trustee P Vishnumurthy, in a statement here today said Dr Nori was selected for the award because of his outstanding contribution in the field of cancer research and treatment.
The award would be presented to Dr Nori at a gala function to be held at Tenali in Guntur district on March 4. Former Karnataka Governor V S Ramadivi would present the award to Dr Nori.
Dattatreyudu Nori, professor and chairman of the Radiation Oncology Department at the New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill-Cornell Medical Center has also been given the 'Tribute to Life' honor by the American Cancer Society (ACS), in recognition of all his contributions to cancer research, patient care and treatment and education for the past one and a half decades, said Distacio before giving the honor.
Dr. Nori is one of the world's leading authorities in the subspecialty of brachytherapy. In 1979 he was the first physician in the United States to work with a computerized brachytherapy treatment system, using it to develop new techniques through clinical research. He was instumental in the development and successful application of brachytherapy, the implantation of radioactive seeds to combat cancer. He developed and popularized the transperineal brachytherapy technique and a non-surgical approach for seed implantation.
