It seems the rapists in the country are not at all minding about the Nirbhaya Act or the severe punishment recommended in it. Every day reports about gang rapes in one state or the other can be seen in the media. Even minor boys are also often found indulging such heinous crimes these days. Hence, Parliament has passed the amended Juvenile Justice Act on yesterday in which children aged 16 also will be treated as majors and given punishments accordingly, if found guilty.
Women and Child Development Minister Menaka Gandhi said that she believes this amended Juvenil Justice Act may keep the children away from committing such crimes. But, she is mistaken. A boy aged 16 years in Maduranthakam near Chennai was arrested by police for committing gang rape on a 21 year old woman. Kamal (25), Nagaraj (26), who were identified as a daily wage laborers, committed this crime and the juvenile also take part in it. Police nabbed them all following a complaint lodged by the victim on December 11th.
They were booked under IPC Sections: 342, 307 and 376. A court in Magistrate Court in Chengalpattu sent Kamal and Nagarj to jail and the juvenile to Juvenile Justice Board in Kelli near Chennai. The board put him in the Juvenile home. He may be tried under amended Juvenile Justice Act passed yesterday.
