I would really like the show to be for 2 hours, and 2 days a week, say Friday and Monday. I think it is too long now. You have captured my interest such that I want to listen to the entire show, listening at work, affects work badly sometimes, I can't blame you, it is so interesting, it has become my weakness!
Secondly please be yourself, I do not like to see you change in your styles just because someone commented on it, people like your style of presentation. Although there are sites like voicevibes, I personally prefer your show to that show.

I feel privileged when ever I listen to your show. Your show is too good and this makes at least myself tune into TORI only on Fridays. I am not sure if this is the right response you are expecting from your listeners.

1) You do marvelously on prepared interviews. Your interaction with call-in listeners sometimes is a bit uneven. Be patient and engage the call-in listeners a bit more.

2)Have a prepared interview for about 30 minutes at least every other week. I know it is quite difficult to get people living in India. The interview could be with Telugus or non-Telugus in the USA.

3) Your program is quite addicitve. Confine the program to three hours. We do not want you to have a burn-out. What a wonderful job you are doing!

I would like to appreciate your efforts for the program. I am listening this program on and off for the  last year and half. It has improved a lot technically and qualitatively. Especially, presentation and its organization. Congratualtions!! Way to GOO!!! Please don't give up the program, abruptly, (may be )due to time limitation or of some other reason.

1: I guess, audience may willing( I do) to listen the program live.
Presently, live program is on Friday and the most of the audience are housewives(according to my guess)! If you shift this live to Saturday morning, you may gain versatile audience, and we may get drastic improvement(innovative) in conversations with listeners( i know that your time and availability are precious, though).

2:Though, we are feeling homely, during your discussions, try to explore the US culture and social environment ( and single parenting etc.,) as many telugu people came to US within 5-6 years and may not having much awareness. This may minimize the murders or accidents of telugu or indian people in USA.

Example: As you are living in US for more than  20years, and you brought up two kids, raise the topics like child-parent relation(in US), and child protection, and how to bring up a kid from child level to college level. This may help in reducing the distance between child and parent as kid grows.
I guess i am clear to you Dr.!
I know that you haven't taken a position as a social welfare officer, but still you can take a chance, through the entertainment.
This thought is of Leelarani as a parent.

3:Induce latest songs also in to the program (ofcourse, some of latest songs may not be much melodious to listen lyrically).
Introduce more wit/jokes in conversations. I know, audience response is less but it is appreciable level.

Thanks for giving me a chance to give suggestions.
Good Luck!!!

-Interviews with prominent people should be scheduled at least once in the month or two and one Friday specifically dedicated .

-Apart from the songs the listerners ask for, there can be specific time for half an hour in the MMGL for  "theme songs"  with your commentary like- kids, love, rain, classical music, patriotic, folk, telugu-hindi equivalent songs with common music. In this way, we can know more about old ,new songs on a particular theme.
-May be this also can be once a month .

-Topics on Telugu literature, Art forms- like the one's presented on SriSri. This can give more insight into the great writers, people dedicated to the upkeep of Art forms and Telugu Literature - Ancient, Medieval to Contemporary. Many in the current generation are not exposed to this field.
In this way , you will be doing a great job to the telugu language , so that as UNESCO stated we can shift "from  becoming an extinct language in a couple of decades" to a dynamic language and contribute to bringing back the Telugu Vaibhavam.

Apart from entertainment and enlightenment, it is the response to each and every call and mail that makes the listeners attached to the programme.
Enormous effort, intellectual analysis from the side of the host is the greatest asset to this programme.
Shows the sincerity and commitment .

i would like to see a definite format atleast for some part of the program. if you can prepare on some subject and engage callers about their opinion on that subject, instead of talking to them about the weather in their city or what they are doing. i think you get that right!

Technical improvements (for eg:- today Feb 20th show, many users couldn't hear you on phone when they called, while you thoguht their phones were bad). Many a times, channel goes totally blank all of a sudden. We have to click on the channel again. Creative improvements are best left to your judgment, as you are good at it. Show sounds too long when it goes beyong 3 pm. May be you could do the show on Friday entirely, but cut it into 2 episodes and play the second half on another day of the week. I am sure, listners would love to hear MMGL on 2 days in a week.

I don't mind to reduce the topics on US politics and economy. But want to see more of AP politics or life style. Then that will take us to India a lot.

I see it as a gathering of telugu community around the world by sharing their ideas and experiences. It reminds our childhood where we listen All India Radio and homely feeling. Show timing is too long ( my opinion) you may cut it down to 2 hrs
Suggestion:
1)You can add some advertisements (or information) about important events worth attending to ( taking into account the popularity of your show). Not too much of comercialization though.

I have always been woken up by "suprabhatam" on radio every day till I was 22 (after that I moved to US). My mom is a fan of radio, she beleives that radio is the best form of entertainment unlike TV, I was defending it but it took me a couple of years untill I started working ,now I realize what she meant.I can do all my chores and entertain myself at the same time while " listening" to the radio :).
And telugu radio is like a breeze of fresh air. I have been on and off TORI for the past 2 years and i'm following MMGL since past 2 months. I do love the program.
Keep up the good work Murali Gaaru.

I would suggest take any social topic every week and discuss on that, let listeners know one week before, so that listeners also prepare there questions, thoguhts.
That helps a lot to like my kind of people who lost touch with social awareness,  being mechanical in life work, home, kids....

Sometimes i felt you cut the conversation with listeners in phone.

Instead of doing continuously 3,4 hrs, why don't split that into 2 days like Friday 2 hrs and some other day 2 hrs.

Most of the people don't know about TORI site, if possible advertise lot, then definitely TORI becomes big success.

Wish you all the best.

Thank you.

1) Stick to only one subject per week.
If you didn't announce the topic at the beginning of the   show quickly settle on one topic in 10 to 20 mins.

2) Bring out more topics on our culture.

3) Choose such a  topics to bring young kids to take part of  show actively.

my three suggestions are
1. As it takes lot of time for you alone to organize this show its better to have  one more female anchor as the show will be very lively.
2.You can develop some kind of system where in every one can express their feelings and ideas on particular topic(some sort of discussions like politics, economics, music, etc..) from where lot of our people get benefited with their discussions. One small hint for doing this is like a conference call between four friends.
3.You can invite some really good personalities to our program and have their interviews who can give some valuable suggestions (like search of jobs, Safety of our fellow citizens, etc....).

I hope my suggestions can help you. Great work keep going.

This program is very good and i appreciate for doing this.It may take your time off but i am sure you will be remembered as NRI Mohana Murali forever.Unfortunately this was my first day listening to this program. But i am sure i will be a regular viewer for this program.

May be little more about self learning, how to avoid pitfalls in USA and utilize the opportunities along with the songs.
Like you I am a big fan of all the programs of AIR Vijayawada and Vividha Bharathi. Your program fondly recalls all my memories.

Balu

This is my first mail or first comments about your program. I am joyous to listen to your program. The value of your program is all round development including family values, educational development for children, hidden learning as you suggested, broad outlook, balanced point of view instead of one sided view point, the desire to extend the boundaries or to think outside the box and above all, a sense of oneness or VASUDAIKA KUTUMBAM as our elders put it so nicely.
I liked the way you stressed about knowing our selves and our partners for success in life. I would like to suggest you this web site. Your views exactly reflects the philosophy of this personality from Maharastra.

The show is good as such. I think if you add how the songs are developed ( some songs may have some inspirational, comedy or circumstance contexts for the writers), though not for all songs once in a while that makes the show more gripping.

I get to listen different perspectives. Your sense of humor ( eventhough it look odd at times). 3-4 hours of Abhiruchi, Bhavukata and extremely good telugu songs.

I like most things about this show.  But let me suggest you one thing that is probably impractical in the immediate future.  You should probably find a host to pair up with you - one who can complement you.  For example, someone who has a better grasp of newer movies and songs or someone who can bring an opposing political philosophy to your discussions.  As I said, it is probably impractical at this stage but something to ponder about...., perhaps?

Like you, I also grew up listening to radio a lot, particularly telugu songs and cricket commentary.  After my B Tech, however, I moved out of Andhra and hardly ever had the opportunity to listen to telugu songs on radio.  TORI and your show bring back the memories of those days.  In particular, I greatly enjoy listening to several songs (in your collection) that I could never find on the internet.  Apart from that entertainment value, I admire your knowledge of many issues that are not necessarily related to your academic expertise.  I appreciate the time you spend on this show and the enthusiasm with which you conduct it every week.  Thank you very much!

May be the show timing. In India, the live show extends till 12am-1am. If you start a little early, that would be great. That's what stopping me to listen to the whole show.
And my bad, whenever I start TORI, in office or at home, I always listen to the initial 2hrs :). Of my whole listening to MMGL from starting of the show, if I count the the program closure messages I had listen, that counts to 4 or 5.

I'm more interested in the topics you discuss during the show than the songs. That said, I like the songs too.

Some times I feel your voice as so dominating, proudish, bragging, SORRY. It is not that hard for you to control the sound of your voice. But I like the show. As always, I am a big fan of radio and telugu songs that too old melodies. At the same time I like Chiranjeevi's Gangleader. You made our dreams of listening to radio overseas come true. So please keep doing what you are doing now. We really appreciate your hard work being a busy person(I saw your profile on your college website). Your voice is very good like Mattapalli Rao garu and Umapathi garu (our old telugu radio manoranjani nnouncers, that makes me listen the show. Thanks alot.

Ofcourse, the songs are excellent. In between your discussions are very good and seems well planned. But sometimes, I observed some mistakes about movie names, songs and other stuff which made so sad because I am a biiiiiiiiggg fan of old songs and some new melodies that shows good lyrics and music.
Keep continue this program. We are very happy to be part of the show. Thanks alot.

The phone line is not clear while talking live, with a lot of noise. When it's played back though, the noise is not heard and it seems to a listener that the caller either is deaf or can't understand your words or wit, which is not the case. It's just that the line is not clear with noise taking over your voice. I realised this when my 6yr old daughter called last week to request a song. When I heard the other callers talk earlier, I assumed they couldn't understand the wit, but after my personal experience, I now know that it's disturbance in the phone line. Please rectify this so that the caller is not discouraged to call again.

1. Increase the Frequency
2. Can discuss abt some weird news around the world(Ex: some weird facts, records etc.,)
3.At times some of your phrases will show a bit self-boasting, which is not your inherit quality. I like that one too though.

Sorry if I hurt you, these are just my personal feelings. Overall I can say this is the best show in Telugu for sure !!! Three kudos for you sir, vowe you a kofee, pls let me know when you are coming to Toronto!

I want to appreciate the stress you give to our Mother Tongue. I adore that quality a lot of you. And one more thing is the way you explain the current trends. For example, the daylight saving thing, I have kept in an out speaker and educated all my roomies(6 membs).

As every thing has its own pros and cons, I want you to be away from some sensitive issues, For example one day you indirectly commented on PRP and Andhra politics saying that things won't change in our state etc., which hurted me a lot and stopped listening to your station for abt 3-4 weeks :-)

Well, meeru adigaaru kabatti cheppalsivasthundi

1) koncham harshness thaggisthee baaguntundi - iam NOT saying mean language or words but just the tone - okkosaari chaala harsh ga sound avuthundi mee tone - and I don't attribute it personally to you - its just the regional thing - nenuu andhra nunchee, kakapothe perigindi hyderabad lo so i know that difference of tone andhra people would have and I can understand that it doesn't meant to be harsh but it just goes like that (my husband is from guntur and he has the same harshness in tone (kottinattu maatladadam) over which we fight so many times) - but just to keep the people hang on to this program thechipettukunnadee ayina koncham sweetness unte baaguntundi - just a little bit - mulpuri gaari voice lo untundi aa sweetness malli - sorry for comparing - i know its bad

2) I know ee madya too much of personalizations thaggayi ani - and i think its good - anthakamundu mee opinions about some things were too much vyakthigathamainavi - I personally think that its ok to express them among friends - but when we are on air trying to reach a larger group of people may be antha bitter personal opinions cheppakapothe baaguntundi emo ani - thappu emi ledu kakapothe its just that we loose some of the listeners - alaanti listeners naaku akkaraledu ani meeru ante - thats being adamant ani naa opinion - sorry if i sound harsh here

3) may be callers ni inkoncham comfortable ga feel ayyetattu chesthee baaguntundi - people would definitely be nervous when they call you - let them come out of it and talk comfortably in their pace - not many callers do that - one man show laa kaakunda - koncham callers ki kuda stage ivaali ani naa opinion (pravarpitha ki, kanakaraju (hopefully i got that right) gaariki, inka okalliddariki thappa meeru antha scene evariki ivvaru -

and just one more technical thing - I somehow feel that conversations appudu volume thakkuva paata appudu volume ekkuva vasthundi ani - dont know if thats really true or just the pitch difference that makes us feel so - its a bit uncomfortable because we have to always change the volume while listening to the program.

feed back iche opportunity ichinanduku thanks - I wanted to extend my support to the program but sort of hesitated to email and this is the right place to say "I simply love this program" and also may be I take the pride in having introduced this program to so many (more than 1 less than 20) listeners since two years.

Yeah sort of hidden learning more than entertainment - As I said I didn't know some of the songs existed - there are so many songs like that (eg: that - jagartha baava cheyi gaajulu, kanne singaram ki tholi mojulu - song  - thats not how the beginning of the song goes but this became my favorite phrase - so well said by the writer) - memu perigetappudu radio lo vachee songs maatramee maaku thelusu (applies to every generation, eg: gaali vaanalo vaana neetilo padava prayanam - from my generation) - but aa mundu vachina songs naaku assalu theleedu ani naaku mee program vinnakee ardam ayyindi - and also entertainment for sure - manchi paata vinetappudu manasuki entha haayiga untundoo - chetha paata vinetappudu antha disturbing gaanuu untundi (tori vachina kothallo oka paata vachedi - kukkalu kukkalu dongalu dongalu ani - that was the first time I ever sent a feed back to some site like this - saying thats the worst song - aa paata vintuntee bathuku meeda virakthi puduthondi ani  - iam glad they stopped playing that song) - ee program vinetappudu manchi paatalu maatramee  vasthaayi anna guarantee untundi - kabatti oka 4-5 gantalu prasantham ga pani chesukovachu - channel maarchalsina avasaram lekunda (nenu usual ga 5 linkulu desktop meeda pettukuni - denilo manchi paatalu vasthe aa channel vintaanu  - ee ayidintilonu machivi raakapothe radiokhushi ki velthaanu) -

An exchange of ideas with Sri Prathivadi Narayan about MMGL

Note on February 25, 2009:

My father used to say that those who offer constructive criticism of you are most likely your well wishers. You want to pay attention to what they have to say about you. This is why I do take the feedback and suggestions seriously. To demonstrate this commitment, I am publishing (with permission) my correspondence with Sri Prathivadi Narayan about Mohana Murali GaanaLahari, which occurred several months ago. In this exchange of ideas between me and Sri Prathivadi Narayan, you can see the basis for some of the thinking behind the content of MMGL.

I left my job in DC and moved back to Colorado. Unlike my job in DC, this job deals with people, and so, I am missing your program quite a bit.

However, I listen to your program whenever I can. I enjoy your wit and witticisms. You keep it very fresh and interesting. You are so knowledgeable in many things, including Telugu songs/literature  that it is a great challenge to find corrections in your commentaries. I won't miss an opportunity to point them out! Also, you do not feel offended when you are corrected, which is a sure sign of supreme self-confidence (nindu kunda thonakadu). I very much enjoyed your commentary about the so-called "separate Telangana agitation" and also your interview with Dr. C. Narayan Reddy. By the way, the music director of one of your favorite songs (kondagaali thirigindi-- Uyyaala-Jumpaala) is, most probably, Pendyala ( I thought you said Master Venu). The song from Ekaveera "pratiraathri vasantha raathri" might have been written by Devulapalli, according to my memory. The internet supports your assertion that it is Ci Naa Ray. If I find any solid evidence, I will let you know.

From me, you will get mostly compliments, and so I introduced your program to my wife and her female friends. They say that you sometimes come across as a sexist (e.g., bamboozling your female callers), but they continue to listen to you.. I do not agree with the sexist tag, but it is their impression. Your audience is majority female. You might want to show the "kinder and gentler" version of Mohan Murali to your female callers.  My wife loved your interview with a Tamil (?) professor about the usage of English slang among the Indian youth. I missed it. She thinks that you are tilting towards modern songs too much sometimes.

I thought that your US political commentaries were too short (and perhaps, half-hearted) in the last week's program. Make them longer. Listeners love them. We need to educate the new arrivals (from India) about US politics.

Continue your excellent work. I will send you my comments once in a while. We are all listening here! If it is Friday, it is the Gaana lahari Day.

Narayan.

You are absolutely correct about your corrections. I do remember misspeaking about Uyyala Jampala MD. But for some reason I remembered Prathi Raatri Vasantha raatri was written by CNR In those days CNR wrote all the songs for a movie or nothing. That's why I thought Devulapalli was incorrect. Only recently I realized the information I have is correct, not my assumption.

I was surprised to learn that some see that I come across as sexist. :) Especially since, several people told me the opposite, i.e. I am very courteous to women. May be I show both sides. If I do come across as 'sexist' it is not because I am one, it is because the label is incorrect. I will explain the possible disconnect.

When I joke around and talk in a friendly way with a regular caller like Kanaka Prasad (from upstate NY), the conversation is received well. A similar friendly conversation with a female caller might be considered 'sexist' or even 'insulting.' Once I told a caller that I talk a lot of sollu on the show. She immediately said "avunu. ..." I immediately put her on the spot - jokingly, "how dare you say that what I talk is sollu..."  I am not sure how she has taken it. My wife would have been offended by it. :) Also, I seem to expect some entertaining (not necessarily intellectual) conversation with callers. When somebody calls and asks me what I was doing, what am I supposed to say? So, I joke... "just walking in the woods (or something like that.)"  Is that rude? May be.

Here are a couple of examples that fed this perception that I come across as 'sexist.' Recently I commented on two songs: The first is a fast number from Munna: "ororee yogi nannu korikeyroy orori yogi nunnu nanileyroy." The second is a melody from Yuva: "konchem konchem korukku tinavayya." I called the difference between the two is that the first one is like velayaalu, and the second one is like illalu. Before the comment, I cautioned the listeners "Be ware. This will be a strong comment." I can see why some female listeners getting offended by that comment. There is another example from my Mallayya maama skit in which I equated high-class prostitution to voting for the Congress party because the party did an election year gimmick by forgiving loans to farmers.

Our Telugu ladies may not be ready or accustomed to such strongly worded analogies. Therefore it is possible that some perceive me as a 'sexist' for remarks like this. But, before I make such remarks I do a self test, "Will I be comfortable saying these things in front of my daughter?" If the answer is yes, then only I will say them on air. Nevertheless, since small kids are listening, I chose my words carefully. i.e. I make sure that small kids don't understand what I am saying. My take is if they do understand what I am saying, there is nothing to worry about - they are mature enough.

Here is another observation that is something very subtle and relates to you directly. I talked to you once on the phone and exchanged several e-mails with you. I looked at the way you composed your mails. There is a clarity of thought and critical analysis in every line you wrote to me. Based on just this much knowledge about you, I say that you are an intellectual. I get the most satisfaction in my being able to connect to people like you, who are on one extreme of my audience…..

To my biggest surprise, my show is attracting a wide spectrum of people: ….small kids to 60+ adults, housewives to professionals. As I said before, it is a lot of work to put the show together. For the time being there is compensation or reward for what I am doing. I will eventually find a way to reap the rewards. But, there are several things that help me keep going with the show and look forward for the following week's show.

1.      All those who repeatedly wrote to me that they eagerly look for Fridays just to listen to my show;

2.      A sense of family type bonding with my listeners

3.      Kids, especially Pravarpitha.

4.      An occasional e-mail feedback like yours - with critical analysis and critique.

You are absolutely correct about my confidence. It may or may not be justified, confidence is what I have in abundance. :) I don't claim to know everything and I don't mind being corrected.

About half-hearted news - you are correct again. To produce a 3 min bit it some times takes more than an hour for composing, verification, writing, recording etc. I could not spend that much time during the last few weeks.

Wanted to write more... (may be later) but I will close with this...

Thanks a lot, my friend (now I am sounding like McCain) - for your feedback. It really made my day.

Mohan garu,

Thank you very much for your long letter. It is always a pleasure to read your writings (long or short), because you are creative and non-confirmist.

I listened to most of today's program. Your commentary on religion and its practice in the US is topical, meaningful, useful and exhaustive. It is obvious that your summer semester started and you have more time to devote to this program. Excellent piece of commentary, indeed! Not preachy, but to the point and very entertaining. That is what you do when you have more time. Probably, it is selfish on my part to expect you to spend so much time each week on your commentary.

I missed last week's program, but I listened to the program two weeks back. I thought that you were more restrained, but thought-provoking nonetheless. I like it. I think some women may misunderstand you because of your occasional references to prostitution (in  a semi-jocular way) e.g., velayalu vs. illalu analogy. Many women feel that prostitution is another male exploitation of women (I agree with it mostly). If you bring it up, they perceive that you are somehow condoning it. Remember, Management guru, Tom Peters once said, "Perception is reality". I would not bring prostitution into the discussion and find another good analogy.

When listeners ask you, "bavunnara?", they are trying to start a conversation. Though tiring, the best reply, in my opinion, is, "bavunnandi". Then just move on. If you try to be creative or humorous to a random listener, that listener will get confused, asking himself/herself, "Why me?" It is not easy to call your show and engage in a conversation with a sharp-wit (such as, you).

I think I never complimented on your tribute to Ghantasala masteru. It was just superb. It was very moving and heart-rending to hear about your parents and the effect of the song from "Panduranga mahatyam". It is another example of how the lives of comedians are enmeshed with tragic incidents. I am sorry about the tragedy. And I am proud of you that you bounced back from it with your sense of humor intact.

Continue with your efforts to prolong your conversations with listerners (minimum of 90 sec) before you ask them for their choice of songs. You did a great job with that gentleman from Norway. You thought I stopped listening because I got bored. Controversial, yes, sharp-tongued, once in a while, but you are never boring!

A couple of possible corrections. The shenoy (sannayi) player in "Muripinche Muvvalu" (Nee leela paadeda Deva) is Karaikuchi Arunachalam (I thought you said Ustad Bismillah Khan). Pantulamma song "Siri mallee neeve" was probably written by Veturi (did you say Gopi?).

Enjoy your vacation of two weeks. You deserve it. If you are coming to the Colorado side, please let me know.

 I will be in touch.

Narayana garu,

Thanks for all your constructive criticism and encouragement. I have been very busy since I got your mail. Since I want to take my time in responding, it took this long to reply.

Your reply was very helpful in seeing things in a different perspective - especially with regards to my references to velayaalu etc. I was once told by a critical thinker that one of my strengths is refreshing bouts of bluntness. She said that my bluntness comes across in a way that is not offensive. May be I got carried away with that feedback. I will definitely restrain myself from making comments that could irritate my female audiences. Thanks for the alert.

Also, thanks for the kind word about the tragedy in my life. When people are put in difficult situations like that, there is no option but accept reality and move on. Trust me, I think that's exactly what I did…. Also, I have to thank my parents and forefathers for passing on the good genes that helped me grow intellectually. For instance, I do realize that one of my strengths is my writing ability (recognizing my own strengths is not bragging, right?). Believe it or not - I am known to be a good writer since I was in the 5th grade. I think I inherited that quality from my father.

When I started this show, my intent was to have fun for a while and show the path to some professional(s) to do the show in the long run. My vision included a host who not only plays listener requested songs but also addresses issues related to expatriate Telugus. While the first part is purely for fun and entertainment, the second part is something I consider as sacred - a mission of sorts - TORI as the Voice of the Telugus, if you will. I am on the lookout for somebody who can be just that. I will continue to do this show only until I find the right person to take over from me.

I have one request for you. I want to use your letter (I won't mention your name if you prefer) as a highlight in the new feedback page I am going to add to the web site. This exchange should help explain my philosophy some of my comments. Can I?

Mohan garu,

Please feel free to use my letter and my name in any way you want. I will be in touch later on.

 Thanks.

 Narayan.
