The story of 3 is all about the unfathomable love between the lead-pair Ram (Dhanush) and Janani (Shruthi Haasan). While Ram is the son of a wealthy businessman, Janani comes from a middle class background with mother, father and a kid sister - who is born deaf and can't speak. On a raining day, Ram meets Janani on way to school and instantly takes to liking her. He along with one of his friends, keeps on following Janani and finally wins her love and they both get married. Ram and Janani move out in to a separate apartment, gifted by Ram's parents. Things go on well for some time and then suddenly, one day, Ram slits his throat and dies.
