Acting upon a complaint by social activist Vasireddy Chandrabala, the Cyberabad police on Tuesday registered a criminal case against the Nacharam Circle Inspector M. Srinivasa Rao, and Sakshi Telugu daily senior correspondent, K. Yadagiri Reddy, for alleged unauthorised collection of the Call Data Record (CDR) of the complainant.

The social activist, Chandrabala lodged a complaint with the Cyberabad police on Monday evening stating that a few days ago Sakshi TV channel had aired a programme and made public her mobile phone CDR damaging her dignity and reputation. The controversy over the CDR leakage began when YSR Congress alleged that CBI Joint Director, V.V. Lakshminarayana, was in regular touch with select journalists to plant negative stories against their jailed leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy. The party accused Ms. Chandrabala of being a conduit for passing on information to media houses against their leader. Refuting the charges, she approached State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) and sought a direction to restrain Sakshi TV from telecasting programmes pertaining to her. The Commission had instructed the Hyderabad Police to enquire and submit a report before July 2.

The police had registered a case after an internal inquiry and based on some TV channel reports and newspaper clippings. Sources said, investigation revealed that the request seeking CDR of Ms. Chandrabala's phone was sent to Airtel nodal officer from Nacharam police station. The Mobile company responded to the official request and the shared details were forwarded to Yadagiri Reddy's email id. The reporter, police say, approached Inspector Srinivasa Rao stating that he wanted some information about a mobile phone number in connection with a kidnap case. The police officer was permitted to collect CDRs of some suspects in vehicle theft cases. Incidentally, the request for CDR was sent through the official email of the Malkajigiri DCP. A case under 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 505 (statements conducting to public mischief) and 509 (word, gestures or act intending to insult modesty of a woman) of Indian Penal Code was registered. Relevant provisions of the information Technology Act, Indian Telegraph Act and the Official Secret Acts were also invoked.

Meanwhile, CBI JD VV Laxminarayana also filed a separate complaint about leaking  his call list in the media by YSRCP. He sent his complaint to Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma. The CCS police have registered a case and are probing in to it.
